About LeftEyeImages.com

Left Eye Images is the brainchild of freelance photojournalist L.E. Baskow. Here's a little bit about me and my life up until now, hang on because it keeps on changing :)

After a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Air Force, I attended the University of Florida to study photojournalism. It was in the military I found photography, college taught me the mechanics of it. After internships with the Miami Herald and the Ft. Myers News Press, I was hired full-time as a staff photographer for the New Castle News in New Castle, Pennsylvania.

The following year I accepted a staff position from Gannett with the Rockford Register Star in Rockford, Illinois, where I continued to hone my skills. Six years of hard work brought me to a temporary-staff position at the Oregonian newspaper in Portland, Oregon, where I ended up as freelancer for numerous publications.

The start-up Portland Tribune newspaper then took me to a level of photography I never imagined. For ten years I was a staff photographer/editor with the numerous responsibilities of a busy newsroom. As budget cuts eliminated positions my job became even more critical and I eventually ended up as the only remaining photographer covering all publication needs.

A move to the Big Island of Hawaii for a year challenged me to become the best freelance photographer around and my work was well received. I found a great connection with editors there while being published in the Hawaii Magazine, Hawaii Business Magazine and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser amongst other publications and events. I returned to Portland, Oregon, last summer and rode my bicycle across the country while completing a photo project and eventual book entitled "Pedaling on the Road of Life." I now freelance across the northwest and am open to whatever new experiences present themselves.

My work has been published in a broad range of publications such as Life, People, Mother Jones, Hawaii, America 24/7 and Oregon 24/7 book projects, One Day at OHSU, many newspapers about the country with images handled by Getty and Zuma Press. I have won individual awards in NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism, with the Associated Press, IPPA, ONPA, OSPJ and Best of the West. As apart of the Portland Tribune we were awarded two Best Non-Daily Newspaper of the Year awards.

I have two great kids Bayley and Sam and life is good in Oregon though the way I live my life I could end up anywhere :)

Aloha for now,

L.E.
